Chris Brown and Ciara - Turntables

One of my dedicated fans brought this track to my attention today after reading about the fusion of eastern and western sounds. This is a great example of a song that would appeal to listeners here in the states yet remain “urban desi” (if it were a desi artist and not chris bizzle, of course).

In my opinion, tracks such as Nivla's "Be Easy" and Kidd Skilly's "Bhangra Chick" (two very popular tracks with an Indian hook), appeal more to the communities where this genre has been accepted (UK, India, etc.) but have not yet gathered such a strong following here in the states. Whereas tracks like, "Beware of the Boys", "Indian flute", "The Bounce" and now "Turntables" by Chris Brown and Ciara - grab the attention of listeners across the globe.

I would love to hear the aforementioned Urban Desi artists rhyme over these beats. Yes I understand they lack proper funding to get beats from Timbaland, but improvise damn it. Calling out ALL Urban Desi artists, is it too much to ask for you to provide a track fusing the eastern/western influences (keeping it urban desi) without actually singing in punjabi, urdu, or whatever other language y'all rhyme in? Look, I'm not telling you to quit what you are doing, obviously it works, all of you have created some sort of fan base regardless of the latitude and longitude. From my understanding, the problem is that these same tracks aren't being embraced by the South Asian community here (the states) as they are in the UK and India, right? Therefore, I am simply asking you to add a little flavor for us U.S. folk. Make some music that I would like to hear (I'm selfish and I don't care), and by telling you what no one else is – I like to think I am doing you a favor. So my words of advice: Go back to basics and make a track with an Indian beat and English lyrics that isn't about girls, partying, or drinking so you can start earning the recognition you deserve, here in the states.

Do you all agree, or am I standing alone on this?

  1. You ask if I agree? I do agree with you, but I don't think its possible. Keep the shit in UK where it bumps and does it's thing, cause really there is no shot of doing it big in the USA (just my opinion, don't forget).

You also you would like to hear the Desi artists rhyme over these beats. I'd love to hear it, but on the spot. It doesn't mean shit to me if you can't hear it and embrace it. Anyone can come up with something and write it down, well maybe not anyone, especially not me, but I'd like to hear freestyles to really judge it.

BTW, I could care less about Jay Sean signing to cash money, is he going to start making out with Birdman now too?

  2. And one thing I forgot to say, I respect these artists for working hard, devoting all their time to this, and making it their passion. If you love something, I truly believe you should never stop working towards it or doing it. Just understand the market (at least for this subject)

  3. Not really feelin 'turntables' or 'be easy'...'bhangra chick' was the most entertaining to listen to, but I didn't understand a majority of the song so I couldn't relate to it...so I won't be bumpin any of these tunes in my playlist

  6. here's the problem that i find, no offense to any of the artists, just me ranting... Kappz you're right they fuse too much desi to ever be considered in the US. That turntables song only sampled like a 4 second clip... let's look at arab money, they sampled like 4 seconds... btw, the music they make is amazing and they all have great talent. Herein lies the problem however, we're indian, we can relate, i met some people here in stl (ya i know) who though all "brownskined" people were muslim. And although they've heard of hindus and all that they clump us into one category. Not all, but majority of the people. Unfortunately those people who try to fuse desi attributes into their songs are / were big artists to begin with. Jay - Z (pmc), timbaland, and now possibly two of the biggest stars in the industry. Essentially these people are invincible, they come out with a track thats bunk, they'll just shake it off and their next joint will be a banger. They're trying to be "original" musically because they can. For those desi artists out there, they're already big in their markets, be it india or uk, and i think they produce music to maintain the reason why these markets love them. Now what they need to do is be "original" in their own markets and if the song hits perhaps itll hit in the us. Look at slumdog millionaire, those guys were dumfounded when they realized how much of an impact it had the us society. Well sorry for the long post, but just my two cents.
